Emma Parrish presents her research at the Schizophrenia International Research Society Congress in April 2024.

The Schizophrenia International Research Society (SIRS) selected Emma Parrish as a 2024 recipient of the Early Career Award. This award supported her attendance at this year’s annual SIRS Congress in Florence, Italy. This recognition is given to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to schizophrenia research through research, teaching, and clinical work.

At the congress, Emma presented a poster titled “Network analysis of interpersonal biases related to 12-month trajectories of suicidal thoughts and behavior in people with serious mental illness (SMI).” In her presentation, Emma investigated how interpersonal biases (i.e. perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness), social motivations, and psychotic symptoms dynamically relate to suicidal ideation and behavior in SMI.

Emma hopes that the results of this project will help researchers and clinicians to better understand unique factors related to suicidal ideation and behavior in SMI and to develop future life-saving crisis interventions for this vulnerable population.
