Diversity in Practicum Sites

Our clinical practicum sites provide opportunities to work with a wide variety of populations.

SDSU Psychology Clinic

  • The Clinic treats a wide array of general problems in a diverse population that frequently, because of limited finances, has few other options for treatment; the cost of treatment is on a sliding scale.
  • Offers therapy in Spanish, supervised by a Spanish-speaking supervisor.
  • The Clinic offers diversity training that may include:
    • LGBTQ-specific issues by UC San Diego’s Campus Diversity officer, the UC San Diego LGBT Resource Center (http://lgbt.ucsd.edu) and/or UC San Diego’s Gender Health Program.
    • Training in using the Cultural Formulation Interview and the ADDRESSING framework.

The following advanced practicum sites serve a broad cross-section of people from San Diego City and County, which, as a major metropolis along an international border, is rich in ethnic, racial, gender identity/sexual orientation, cultural/subcultural, age, and socioeconomic diversity.

UC San Diego Health

  • Several of the clinics/inpatient rotations serve lower Social Economic Status (SES) populations accessing public services, providing extensive experience with diverse clientele.
  • Neuropsychological practica assess many older adults for cognitive disorders.
  • Eating disorder practicum serves many children and adolescents.

Rady Children’s Hospital

  • Inpatient and outpatient practica are available working with children and adolescents.
  • The Autism Discovery Institute provides comprehensive services for children with autism spectrum disorders.

Veteran Affairs (VA) San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS)

  • Multiple opportunities to work with elderly veterans with psychological, cognitive, and medical concerns.
  • PTSD treatment for Military Sexual Trauma with female and male veterans.
  • Family Mental Health Program serves all types of families including same-sex couples and parents.
