The Emphasis in Quantitative Methods would be fulfilled by successful completion (minimum grade of B) of:
- SDSU PSY 770A-B Experimental Design and Data Analysis in Behavioral Research (3 units each, required for PhD)
- SDSU PSY 875 Advanced Multivariate Statistics (3 units, required for PhD)
- SDSU PSY 776 Multi-level Modeling for Psychology Research (3 units, doctoral elective to be offered annually at SDSU)
And successful completion of:
Any other advanced doctoral-level elective courses (equivalent at least 3 units) from the approved list below, OR any other advanced doctoral-level elective course (equivalent at least 3 units) identified by the student and approved (in writing) by the JDP Co-Directors.*
*To request approval of an elective course, please send a copy of the course syllabus to the JDP Co-Directors via email. The JDP Co-Directors will only approve an elective course after consultation with quantitative faculty.
Approved List of Elective Courses:
Courses:
- SDSU PH 724 Advanced Epidemiology Methods
- SDSU PH 826 Analysis of Case-Control Studies
- SDSU PH 827 Analysis of Cohort Studies
- UCSD FMPH 222 Biostatistical Methods II*
- UCSD FMPH 223 Analysis of Longitudinal Data
- UCSD FMPH 224 Clinical Trials*
- UCSD FMPH 291 Advanced Methods in Epidemiology and Causal Inference
- UCSD COGS 260 Fundamentals of Functional Neuroimaging
- UCSD NEUG 231 Experimental Data Analysis in Python
- UCSD NEUG 240 Mathematical Foundations for Computational Neuroscience
*Please note that the course instructor will need to approve JDP student enrollment on an individual basis due to prerequisites.
Elective Courses Not Allowed:
- SDSU PH 627 and 628 – Syllabi reviewed and determined to have too much overlap with already required JDP coursework. (Exception: Students who specifically want to learn SAS can propose that this course be included for their quantitative emphasis requirement, with justification.)
- SDSU PH 700A Data Analysis with R – Syllabus reviewed and determined to have too much overlap with 770A&B.
- UCSD FMPH 221 – Syllabus reviewed and determined to have too much overlap with already required JDP coursework.
- UCSD CLRE courses – These courses are not covered by UC San Diego tuition and cannot be taken.
Total coursework required is 15 units.
The proposed Program of Study for the Emphasis in Quantitative Methods must be approved by the student’s Guidance Committee Chair (and Co-Chair if applicable). To request a copy of this form, please email the Program Coordinators.
