Raymond La

Graduation year: 2019

M.A. Faculty Mentor: Dr. May Yeh

Where are you now? University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), clinical-community psychology Ph.D. Currently attending, 3rd year Clinical-community psychology Ph.D. student, UIUC (Research, teaching, clinical work, grad student union organizer)

What is the best advice you would give to someone just starting out in this Master’s program? Master’s (and even Ph.D.) programs are a time to explore your interests and make mistakes. These mistakes are opportunities to grow and develop as a professional rather than an indication of your failure/incompetence, so don’t be afraid to try something because you’re “not good/smart enough” to do it

Where are you living now? Illinois

Other Updates: A manuscript I co-authored (title: Internalization of the Model Minority Myth and Sociodemographic Factors Shaping Asians/Asian Americans’ Experiences of Discrimination During COVID-19) has been accepted in American Journal of Community Psychology (AJCP) as part of a special issue on the two pandemics (biological COVID-19 & racism pandemic/racial reckoning).

What is the best advice you would give to someone just starting out in this Master’s program? Use this time as an opportunity to learn, work hard, network, be mentored, have fun with your cohort, and really consider what you’d like to do post-master’s. Talk to faculty and other students about their trajectories to help!

Where are you living now? San Diego

Other Updates: Got married, had a baby, completed my dissertation while working full time and raising said baby (my biggest accomplishment!), moved a few times (so happy to be back in San Diego), started postdoc, and will be walking in December. Yay!
